Bargaining for Peace, Striving for Stability - A Study on the European Union's Effectiveness as International Mediator
Supervisor: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Arne Niemann

Project description:
My dissertation analyses the European Union’s effectiveness as international mediator. It is guided by three research questions: (a) How can EU mediator effectiveness and its conditions be appropriately conceptualised? (b) How effective is the EU as a mediator in peace negotiations? (c) How can we explain variation in EU mediator effectiveness across cases? Drawing on mediation research and EU foreign policy studies, I develop a theoretical framework that is applied to three cases of EU mediation: (1) EU mediation in the conflict over Montenegro’s independence (2001-2006), (2) EU mediation between Kosovo and Serbia in the framework of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue (ongoing since 2011), and (3) EU co-mediation in the Geneva International Discussions about the territorial conflicts in Georgia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia (since 2008).
