The European Commission has awarded a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (JMCE) to a joint team of academics from the Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt and the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) of Mainz.
A JMCE is a focal point of competence and knowledge on European Union-related subjects, funded by the European Commission that aims at developing synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies, while ensuring openness to civil society.
During its three-year programme the new Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence will focus on research and teaching activities related to the “EU in Global Dialogue”. The research components that that build on core competencies of the JGU team include the external dimension of EU migration policy and regional integration in comparative perspective. As for teaching, the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence will, among others, allow the University of Mainz to sustain and expand its innovative teaching in terms of EU simulations.
The new “Rhine-Main” JMCE is one of the few cross-institutional Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence. It will fill the general cooperation agreement between the TU Darmstadt and the JGU Mainz of 2014 with life.
The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence will be led by Prof. Michele Knodt (TU Darmstadt) and Prof. Arne Niemann (JGU Mainz).
